Meet Christina Ohlrogge

Eileen Ballance '15 • Oct 10, 2022

Christina had known our Speakers Bureau co-leader Kate Melhuish for a number of years and attended many monthly Good Gardening lectures at Pretlow Library. Finally in 2021, after taking the online Master Class series, she felt ready to take the “real” NMG training class in 2022 with the necessary commitment of her time slowly shifting from other community volunteer engagements to the environment and education through gardening.

Christina lived in Germany for many years before she moved to Norfolk in 2008 when her husband Ingo took a position in the history department at ODU. The family bought a house in Suburban Acres with a “green garden” including several native and non-native plants, like Christina’s four beloved river birches. Over the years she started to convert the lawn area more and more into a natural habitat for pollinators. She still strives to learn about natives and the best implementation into a suburban garden in zone 8A.

Christina enjoys her time at the Potager Garden, Weyanoke Bird and Wildflower Sanctuary, Ernie Morgan Center Eco Garden and the Significant Tree Program, and likes to keep up with those as well as venturing into community outreach and education programs.

Christina has degrees in Museum Studies and Interior Design and has a lifelong interest in architecture and landscape design. She enjoys her yearly summer trips to visit family in Germany taking advantage of the culture and food opportunities on both sides of the Atlantic.

Christina has a daughter and son-in-law up in Winchester with a baby grandson, as well as a son who’s now a junior at Granby High School.

When you see Christina, be sure to give her a shout out and welcome her to the Norfolk Master Gardeners.
